Promoting sustainable development and poverty reduction is an important objective of Norwegian foreign policy and development cooperation. Consequently these issues are also significant objectives of the Climate and Forest Initiative, in addition to the direct climate-related goals listed below.
The purpose of this particular funding scheme is to provide support to Norwegian as well as international non-governmental actors to contribute to:
- the inclusion of emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) in a new international climate regime
- take early action to achieve cost-effective and verifiable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions
- promote the conservation of natural forests to maintain their carbon storage capacity
