Norway and Guyana cooperate to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg met with Guyana’s President Bharrat Jagdeo in Oslo today, to discuss climate change and forest issues. The two leaders agreed to establish a partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation. The goal is to establish mechanisms on deforestation and forest degradation to be included in a post-2012 climate change agreement.

“The developing and the developed countries must work together to address global warming. I commend the Government of Norway for showing leadership through its climate and forest initiative”, stated President Jagdeo.

Prime Minister Stoltenberg said “President Jagdeo’s personal engagement and vision for ways to preserve Guyana’s tropical forests, is impressive. He is a frontrunner among the developing countries and plays an important role in the ongoing UNFCCC negotiations”.
