Stoltenberg met Barroso and Schulz

Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg today met President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz.

Mr Barroso and Mr Schulz are in Oslo in connection with the award of the Nobel Peace Prize for 2012. At the meeting, Mr Barroso, Mr Schulz and Mr Stoltenberg discussed Norway’s cooperation with the EU, and Mr Stoltenberg emphasised how important it is for Norway to have close contact with both the European Commission and the European Parliament.

“Norway and the EU share a common history and geographical region, and we share fundamental values relating to democracy and the rule of law. It is therefore both important and natural that Norway and the EU cooperate closely in many areas,” Mr Stoltenberg said.

Mr Stoltenberg, Mr Barroso and Mr Schulz also discussed the economic situation in Europe.

“We support the EU’s efforts to promote a sense of European solidarity and economic growth. It is very important for Norway that our most important trade partners experience economic growth,” Mr Stoltenberg said.

Rencontre entre Stoltenberg, Barroso et Schulz

Le Premier ministre Jens Stoltenberg a rencontré aujourd’hui José Manuel Barroso, Président de la Commission européenne, et Martin Schulz, Président du Parlement européen.

MM. Barroso et Schulz sont à Oslo pour la remise du prix Nobel de la paix 2012. Les trois responsables politiques ont discuté de la coopération entre la Norvège et l’UE, et M. Stoltenberg a souligné combien il est important pour la Norvège d’avoir de bons contacts avec la Commission européenne et le Parlement de l’UE.

« La Norvège et l’UE ont une histoire et une géographie communes, celles de l'Europe, et sont l’une et l’autre attachées aux valeurs fondamentales de la démocratie et de l’État de droit. Aussi est-il à la fois naturel et important d’entretenir une bonne coopération entre notre pays et l’UE dans de nombreux domaines », a déclaré M. Stoltenberg.

MM. Stoltenberg, Barroso et Schulz ont également abordé la situation économique en Europe.

« Nous soutenons les efforts de l’UE en vue de promouvoir la solidarité et la croissance en Europe. Il est très important pour la Norvège que l’évolution économique de notre principal partenaire commercial soit satisfaisante », a affirmé M. Stoltenberg.
