Today Statoil has entered into a long-term gas sales agreement with the British company Centrica. “This is a very important agreement that will provide revenue and jobs for the Norwegian oil and gas industry. It will ensure long-term cooperation between one of the world’s largest suppliers of natural gas and one of the world’s largest gas markets,” said Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.
Under the agreement, Statoil will deliver 5 billion cubic metres of gas per year during the period 2015–2025 to the UK market.
“The agreement means that gas will play an essential role in meeting the UK’s future energy needs. The agreement confirms Norway’s role as a secure, reliable and long-term supplier of gas to the major energy market in the UK,” Mr Stoltenberg said.
Statoil is currently the second largest supplier of gas to Europe. The agreement represents five per cent of the total gas consumption in the UK, covering the energy needs of 3.5 million households.
