“The European Union has played a key role in efforts to safeguard peace and democracy in Europe”

“On behalf of the Norwegian Government, I would like to congratulate the European Union on the award of the Nobel Peace Prize for 2012. Today’s announcement is clear recognition of the significance of the EU for ensuring lasting stability and security in Europe,” Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said.

In its announcement of this year’s award, the Norwegian Nobel Committee refers to the fact that the European Union and its forerunners have for over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe.

“The horrific events of the two World Wars led to a realisation that the countries in Europe needed to stand together. The EU has played a key role in democracy-building in the former dictatorships in southern Europe. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the EU continued to safeguard peace by enlarging the union to include the new democracies of Central and Eastern Europe,” Mr Stoltenberg said. 

“These are projects of historical significance that have helped to secure peace and stability in Europe,” Mr Stoltenberg said.

«Au nom du gouvernement norvégien, j'aimerais féliciter l'Union européenne pour son prix Nobel de la paix 2012. Le choix du lauréat 2012 constitue une reconnaissance notoire de l’importance de l’UE pour le maintien d’une stabilité et d’une sécurité durables en Europe», a déclaré le Premier ministre Jens Stoltenberg.

Dans son annonce du lauréat 2012, le Comité Nobel souligne que l’Union européenne et ses ancêtres ont contribué pendant plus de soixante ans à promouvoir la paix et la réconciliation, la démocratie et les droits de l’homme en Europe.

«Les horreurs commises pendant les deux guerres mondiales ont fait comprendre que les pays européens devaient s’unir. L’UE a joué un rôle clé dans la démocratisation des anciennes dictatures de l’Europe du Sud et, après la chute du mur de Berlin, elle a continué à préserver la paix en élargissant l’union aux nouvelles démocraties d’Europe centrale et orientale», a affirmé M. Stoltenberg.

«Ce sont là des projets d’une portée historique, qui ont permis de sauvegarder la paix et la stabilité en Europe», a ajouté le Premier ministre.
