CCS on the agenda in meeting with Šefčovič

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) was among the main subjects in the meeting between Minister of Petroleum and Energy Tord Lien and Vice President in the European Commission Maroš Šefčovič. The two met in Slovakia's capital Bratislava 28 October in the context of the Tatra Summit.
- To achieve the ambitions of the Paris Agreement, CCS will be an important part of the solution. I am therefore glad to see the EU Commission continuing its strong interest in CCS, including the development of new CCS projects in Norway, says Minister Tord Lien.
In October, the Government proposed to allocate NOK 360 million for further studies of full-scale CCS in Norway. This followed a feasibility study report on full-scale carbon capture from July, showing that it is possible to realise a full-scale CCS chain in Norway by 2022. In his meeting with Šefčovič, Lien also pointed at the need for regulations concerning transport of CO2 across borders. So far, only a few countries have ratified the London Protocol, which allows for this.
During the meeting, further development of the Energy Union was also discussed.
- Norway produces approximately one fourth of all gas consumed in the EU. We are also part of the internal electricity market. The development of the Energy Union is therefore important to Norway, says Lien.
During the Tatra Summit, he participated in a discussion on energy security in Europe. He underlined the importance of well-functioning markets and robust infrastructure, both in the gas and electricity market.
