The Finnish Minister Mrs. Anne Berner, the Swedish Minister Mr. Peter Eriksson and the Norwegian State Secretary Mr. Reynir Jóhannesson have discussed the possibility of joining forces to facilitate the development of 5G, by establishing a Nordic-Baltic 5G Action Plan open to all the Nordic-Baltic States, to complement in particular the initiatives to be launched at the Nordic-Baltic conference on digitalisation, "Digital North" to be held in Oslo on April 25th, organised under Norwegian presidency of the Nordic Council.
The countries in the Nordic-Baltic region are advanced users of new technologies and communications services. In Barcelona, Nordic politicians have discussed how the Governments best can support and facilitate rapid development and deployment of the next generation mobile communications technology, 5G.
5G is not merely a "faster version" of 4G. 5G is more about enriching different sectors of the economy through mobile networks connectivity and services, it is about the internet of things (IoT) and it is about innovation and value added by using sensors, data and analytics in new ways. 5G will bring substantial gains to the economy and the society as a whole.
The Nordic politicians have agreed to support the development of 5G, inter alia by:
- Making more spectrum available in a speedy manner, necessary for testing, research and the commercial roll out of 5G networks.
- Cooperation with Industry in Pilots on 5G services in Public Private Partnerships, e.g. through Universities or public enterprises.
- Supporting innovation and development of products and services making use of 5G networks.
- Encouraging participation from Universities and public research programs in development of new use of 5G services.
- Promote early deployment in major urban areas and along major transport paths.
