‘It was with great sorrow that I received news of the death of former President Shimon Peres. We have lost a great statesman and a courageous politician who never relinquished his vision of peace in the Middle East. Mr Peres maintained his engagement and determination right up to the end,’ said Prime Minister Erna Solberg.
‘I received President Shimon Peres when he visited Norway in 2014. He was particularly interested in involving young people in the struggle to achieve a peaceful future for the Middle East. The most important key to peace in the region is for young people to have hope, feel that they are taken seriously and have an opportunity to take part in society. Shimon Peres devoted his last years to this vision,’ said Ms Solberg.
Shimon Peres was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994, together with Yasir Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin, for his courage and his efforts to bring about peace between Israelis and Palestinians. His political career extended over more than 70 years, and included serving as both Prime Minister and President of Israel.
‘My thoughts are with Shimon Peres’ family and with the people of Israel who have lost a great leader. The peace efforts of this illustrious statesman and Nobel Laureate should be an inspiration for us all,’ said Ms Solberg.
