‘I would like to congratulate Nadia Murad and Denis Mukwege on winning the Nobel Peace Prize for 2018. They have been awarded the prize for their fight against sexual violence in armed conflicts,’ said Prime Minister Erna Solberg.
The two prizewinners have put sexual violence and the suffering of women in conflicts high on the international agenda.
‘Women are particularly vulnerable in armed conflicts. Sexual violence is used as a weapon. This is unacceptable. Sexual violence causes terrible suffering for the women concerned, and also has a profound impact on their communities,’ said Ms Solberg.
Dr Mukwege’s work at the Panzi Hospital in the Democratic Republic of Congo has extended beyond purely medical treatment of victims of sexual violence; he has also helped to strengthen women’s rights. Nadia Murad has given a powerful voice to all the Yazidi women who suffered for months in ISIL captivity.
