Gender equality meeting

Chile and Norway share a commitment to promoting women’s empowerment and gender equality. The two leaders invited gender equality champions from UN Agencies and civil society to discuss how to advance women’s rights together.

This year is the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, the 15th anniversary of the adoption of UN Security Council resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, and the year of the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Prime Minister Solberg underlined the importance of education as a key to empowerment for young girls and for adult women alike.  She called for men to be champions for gender equality. Looking ahead to the Security Council debate on women, peace and security, she emphasized that the issue of violent extremism and women’s participation in policy making to prevent violent extremism must be a priority.
