Foreign Minister Brende congratulates Tunisia on constitution

“We are very pleased that Tunisia has adopted a constitution that safeguards basic human rights and builds on democratic principles,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.

Three years after the revolution in Tunisia marked the beginning of the Arab spring, Tunisia has passed a milestone in its democratic transition process. After a long period of political stalemate, the National Constituent Assembly has reached agreement on a new constitution. National dialogue and cooperation between politicians and representatives from civil society have resulted in a constitution that safeguards basic rights such as freedom of expression, gender equality and non-discrimination.

“I would also like to congratulate Mehdi Jomaa on his appointment as interim prime minister. It is crucial that the new transitional Government succeeds in ensuring political and economic stability in Tunisia and in holding fair and transparent national elections,” said Mr Brende.
