'I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to Aung San Suu Kyi and her party, the National League for Democracy, on their landslide victory in Myanmar's parliamentary elections on 8 November. The impressive result reflects the clear mandate they have been given by the people of Myanmar to continue to work towards a democratic future,' said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.
According to the electoral commission, the National League for Democracy (NLD) has won a majority in the parliament of Myanmar.
'The parliamentary elections are an important milestone in Myanmar's democratic transition, and they were conducted very well. It is vital that the transition to a new government takes place in the same democratic and correct manner, in line with the signals that have been given by those in power. It is paradoxical, though, that the winner of the elections cannot be elected president of the country, for constitutional reasons,' said Mr Brende.
'Norway will continue to follow developments closely and will continue to support the people of Myanmar in their pursuit of democratic reforms, development, and national reconciliation,' said Mr Brende.
