'The political dialogue in Libya has resulted in the final text of a political agreement for Libya that safeguards the main interests of both sides in the conflict. Norway fully supports the agreement, which was presented to the parties late on Monday evening by the UN's Special Representative for Libya, following protracted negotiations under the auspices of the UN,' said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.
The agreement paves the way for political arrangements to support democratic transition in Libya, to be led by a Government of National Accord. Negotiations on the composition of the government have yet to be completed, and UN Special Representative for Libya Bernardino León aims to convene a meeting on this issue immediately after this week's Muslim holiday, Eid Al-Adha.
'I strongly urge the parties to approve this agreement promptly and to take part in the negotiations on the formation of a government. The basis for a national unity government should be in place well before the democratic mandate of the House of Representatives runs out in less than a month's time. It is vital that the international community has a legitimate partner in Libya by that time, so that we can work together to address common challenges,' Mr Brende said.
