‘Georgia is an important partner for Norway. For many years, Georgia has shown itself to be a reform leader in the region, and we are now looking forward to establishing a Norwegian embassy in Tbilisi,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Ine Eriksen Søreide after her meeting with Georgia’s Foreign Minister, David Zalkaliani, in Oslo today.
Norway and Georgia have developed active cooperation in several fields over the course of many years. These include the management of hydropower resources, good governance, human rights, and democracy and the rule of law. Numerous actors in both countries have been involved in this cooperation. Norway also cooperates with Georgia on reforms and competence-building in the defence sector, both within the framework of Nato and bilaterally. There is an untapped potential for strengthening business relations, and Norwegians are discovering what Georgia has to offer as a travel destination. These were among the topics discussed at the meeting between the two foreign ministers.
‘I am pleased that our decision to open an embassy in Tbilisi could be announced in 2018, as Georgia is celebrating the centenary of the establishment of the first democratic Georgian Republic this year. Norway was one of the first countries to recognise Georgia’s independence. By establishing an embassy in Georgia, we will be taking an important new step forward in our bilateral relations,’ said Ms Eriksen Søreide.
Foreign Minister Eriksen Søreide also took the opportunity to reiterate that Norway fully supports Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Foreign Minister Zalkaliani is visiting Norway on 12-13 November as part of a Nordic tour. While in Oslo, he will also give a lecture at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (Nupi) and have talks with members of the Storting.
