The Philippine Government and the Communist Party of the Philippines have declared humanitarian ceasefires to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.
The parties to the conflict both emphasise that the current focus must be on humanitarian measures and assistance to the population as the country faces a public health crisis. The ceasefires will be especially important to the civilian population in the areas affected by conflict. The ceasefires are to remain in force until 15 April.
‘It is encouraging that both parties have declared humanitarian ceasefires to fight the common threat represented by Covid-19. Norway will continue to assist the parties towards a lasting political solution and the actors on the ground to safeguard humanitarian measures and security for the civilian population. I hope this might also inspire parties in other conflicts to heed Secretary-General Guterres’ call for a global ceasefire,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Ine Eriksen Søreide.
The armed conflict between the Philippine Government and the communist National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) has lasted more than 50 years, with peace talks taking place in periods during the past 33 years. Norway has acted as facilitator of the peace process since 2001.
