Norway increases support to Sudan for reform process and Covid-19 response

At the Friends of Sudan meeting on 7 May, Norway, together with other donor countries, the UN, the World Bank and regional organisations in the Friends of Sudan, expressed support for Sudan’s Transitional Government and the ongoing process of reform and democratisation in the country, as well as for Sudan’s efforts to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. The Friends of Sudan at the same time reaffirmed their strong backing for Sudan’s ongoing peace process.  

‘We must support Sudan’s Transitional Government, its programme of reforms and the peace process in this critical phase for the country,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Ine Eriksen Søreide.

Norway contributes funding both for humanitarian efforts in Sudan and for long-term development projects. The additional NOK 100 million (approximately USD 10 million) will be allocated through a multi-donor trust fund administered by the World Bank.

‘Support provided through the multi-donor trust fund will be used among other things to assist the most vulnerable families in the country. We are also planning to provide further funding for the Covid-19 response,’ said Minister of International Development Dag-Inge Ulstein.
