'Norway welcomes that the UN Security Council has agreed on an important Press Statement condemning the violent escalation in Marib, as well as the attacks against Saudi Arabia and expressing concern about the military escalation elsewhere in Yemen. The statement is being made at a critical time, and sends a clear signal to the parties to the conflict', said Minister of Foreign Affairs Ine Eriksen Søreide.
'The violent escalation in Marib is further deteriorating the grave humanitarian situation for one million internally displaced persons. The Council emphasises the need for a nationwide ceasefire, and urges the parties to work with the UN Special Envoy to negotiate a nationwide ceasefire and contribute to an inclusive, political process', the Foreign Minister said.
'Norway strongly engaged in the process leading to the Press Statement of the Council, for instance by emphasizing the need to condemn the use of child soldiers in Marib'.
'Furthermore, Norway underlined that only an inclusive process can lead to peace, and welcomes that the role of women and youth were highlighted in the statement. Norway also calls for ensuring accountability for human rights violations and abuses, and violations of international humanitarian law'.
'The situation in Yemen is dire, and Norway will continue to use its period as an elected member on the Security Council to support the UN-led political process. Norway prioritises the ongoing protection of civilians, particularly women and children, and ensuring lasting peace and security in Yemen', Foreign Minister Eriksen Søreide said.
