Norway condemns attack on UN base in South Sudan

“We condemn the attack on the UN base in Jonglei in South Sudan on 19 December. The UN is there to protect civilians. It is unacceptable that they themselves are targeted,” said Foreign Minister Børge Brende.

Mr Brende is very concerned about the critical situation in South Sudan and the serious incidents that have taken place over the last few days. The UN has reported that lives might have been lost in the attack on the UNMISS base in Akobo, in Jonglei state on 19 December.

“UN personnel are entitled to protection in their work to protect the civilian population in South Sudan, who have endured terrible suffering for a long time. This attack must be investigated and those responsible brought to justice,” said Mr Brende.

Mr Brende discussed the situation in South Sudan with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and other UN leaders during his visit in New York this week.

“We urge all parties to refrain from the use of violence and to help to find a political solution to the conflict,” said Mr Brende.
