Norway aligns itself with restrictive measures against Syria

‘It is important that Norway, together with our European partners, sends a clear signal to the Syrian authorities that the persistent use of violence is unacceptable and must end immediately. Norway will therefore align itself with the EU’s new restrictive measures against Syria,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.  

The conflict in Syria has created a humanitarian crisis with spillover effects throughout the whole region, and is reversing development. This means that an even stronger response is required from the international community. The EU decided on 23 June to impose travel restrictions on an additional 12 persons and to freeze their assets. Norway has today decided to align itself with these reinforced restrictive measures against Syria. 

The 12 persons are all ministers in the Syrian Government, and therefore have a particular responsibility for the serious situation that has arisen. 

‘Norway deplores the continued and escalating violence that is particularly affecting civilians in the country. We urge the Syrian authorities, and the other parties to the conflict, to end the use of violence immediately, to comply with international law, release political prisoners, and engage in dialogue,’ said Mr Brende. 

Norway has aligned itself with all the EU restrictive measures against Syria.
