Minister of Foreign Affairs congratulates new Government in Myanmar

Aung San Suu Kyi and her party the National League for Democracy (NLD) won an overwhelming victory in the election in November last year, but a provision in the Constitution prevents her from becoming president. 'I hope that the continued reform and democratisation process will lead to all members of parliament being elected and make it possible for all citizens to stand for election on equal terms,' said Mr Brende.

In his inaugural address to the parliament, the new President said he would give priority to national reconciliation, national peace, a democratic federal constitution, and a better standard of living for the population.

'Norway has a long-term engagement in Myanmar and will continue to support the reform process. Peace, democracy and human rights, and support for civil society and natural resource management are the most important pillars of our broad cooperation. We have confirmed that we are prepared to support the new Government's priorities,' said Mr Brende.
