NATO, in need of reform
“Never again.” This was the reaction in Norway and Denmark after World War II, a sentiment that has echoed for generations. We have learned from our history that we as small and open democracies back then and today are dependent on strong Allies to guarantee our freedom. For this reason, our countries were founding members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and strong defenders of liberal values during the Cold War. Together with Iceland, our two countries are NATO in the Nordic region.

Strong Allies in the North Atlantic
Iceland and Norway, long-standing partners and Allies, have a common interest in safeguarding and promoting prosperity and security in our region. In recent years, we have seen new security challenges emerging threatening to undermine the rule-based international order. This calls for active diplomacy coupled with national resilience and international cooperation on security and defence.

Taking steps towards enhancing the cooperation on defence
The Russian aggression against Ukraine and the illegal annexation of Crimea are violations of international law and other international agreements. These actions represent the greatest challenge to the European security architecture. These developments have led to deterioration in the security situation in Northern Europe over the past year. The region is still considered to be stable, however, we must be prepared for the likelihood of crises and incidents. In the current security situation in Europe, our assessment is that there can be no ‘business as usual’ and that we are faced with a new normal.
