State Secretariat Chancery in Stockholm (1814–1906)

The Norwegian State Secretariat Chancery in Stockholm was established on 30 November 1814. This followed the Storting´s approval of the Swedish-Norwegian personal union on 4 November 1814. The Chancery was operative from late December 1814, as secretariat to the Norwegian Council of State Division in Stockholm. The Division consisted of the Prime Minister of Norway and two ministers. The ministers came over from Christiania (Oslo) to serve for normally one year at the time.

The number of Norwegian ministers in Stockholm was increased from three to ten during the short periods between 1857 and 1881 when a Swedish-Norwegian interim government ruled while the King was ill or abroad.

On 21 July 1873, the responsibility as Norway’s Prime Minister was moved from the office as Prime Minister in Stockholm to a new office as Prime Minister in Christiania (Oslo). The office as Prime Minister at the Council of State Division in Stockholm was now ranked after Norway’s Prime Minister in Christiania.

The State Secretariat Chancery in Stockholm was led by a director general. Between 1822 and 1841, the title was state secretary, the same as the title held by the head of the State Secretariat in Christiania.

The Norwegian Council of State Division in Stockholm was abolished following the Storting´s declaration on 7 June 1905 that the unon with Sweden was dissolved. The Norwegian State Secretariat Chancery in Stockholm was closed in 1906.
