If you have parental responsibility for a child that is about to be abducted from Norway, you should contact the police immediately by going to your nearest police station or by calling the following telephone number: 02800.
The police can assist in notifying relevant airports, etc., if possible, to prevent the child from leaving Norway.
If you have parental responsibility for a child that has been abducted from Norway, or that is being kept abroad following an approved vacation / right of access, you should contact the police immediately to report the child missing.
It may be appropriate to report the child missing, even if you know where the child is located abroad. This will allow the police abroad to follow-up the matter.
The police should also consider whether to charge the abductor and institute a search for this person nationally or internationally.
When the police receive a missing person report, they will need as many details as possible about the abduction.
You should provide the police with information as soon as possible about
- Correct personal details of your child (name/ date of birth / place of birth / nationality)
- An account of the actual circumstances regarding the abduction /retention
- Information about where your child may be located
You should take the following to the police
- Documentation that you have parental responsibility for the child (e.g. copy of agreement / judgment / ruling / birth certificate)
- Photo of the child (and possible abductor)
- The child’s passport (if you have it)
Child abduction may be a criminal offence
In some cases it may be appropriate to report the abductor under the provisions of the Norwegian General Civil Penal Code. Read more about this under Child abduction is a criminal offence.
