Care Allowance for a Sick Child
Article | Last updated: 12/12/2024 | Ministry of Labour and Social Inclusion
Care allowance is a financial support for working individuals who need to take time off work to care for a child requiring continuous supervision and care due to illness, injury, or disability.
Grading of care allowance
If the child is under organised supervision of others, e.g. attends daycare or school part of the day, the care allowance may be reduced (graded). When grading, consideration must be given to the need to be on standby and to rest after night-time supervision and care. The care allowance can be graded down to 20 percent.
Care allowance can be granted as long as the conditions are met, until the child turns 18 years old.
How is the care allowance calculated?
Care allowance is calculated in the same way as sick pay:
- For employees and freelancers: The calculation is based on the income reported to the a-ordning in the last three months before the absence started.
- For self-employed individuals: The calculation is based on the average pensionable income for the last three years.
Care allowance is paid at 100% of the calculation basis from the first day of absence, but cannot exceed 6 times the basic amount.
