Environment Ministers from Norway and 13 other countries are calling for a more ambitious and effective agreement for biodiversity, to be agreed in China in 2020 .
During the Trondheim Conferences on Biodiversity, July 2 - 5, Minister of Climate and Environment Ola Elvestuen hosted a high-level meeting with ambitious Environment Ministers and Deputy Ministers. In The Trondheim Call for Action Ministers commit to working together to deliver an ambitious, strong, practical and effective global biodiversity framework.
- The alarming loss of nature and its species is just as catastrophic as climate change. Solutions to save nature - our life support system, and mitigate climate change are interconnected, and we need to solve these problems in concert. We need an agreement where parties commit to take immediate action, and ensure implementation and progression over time. Biodiversity needs its own "Paris Agreement", says Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment Ola Elvestuen.
The Call for action states that the destruction of nature and the extinction of species occurs at a rate never seen before in human history. Without a fundamental change, we will not be able to meet the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, commitments under the Paris Agreement and the 2050 Vision for Biodiversity. However, there is still time to make the necessary changes
- I am encouraged by the list of countries that stand behind the Trondheim Call for a more ambitious and effective framework, says Minister of Climate and Environment Ola Elvestuen.
Behind The Trondheim Call for Action are ministers and deputy ministers from Canada, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Germany, Finland, France, Indonesia, Japan, Serbia, South Africa, Uganda and the UK together with Norway.
The countries also commit to intensifying their own efforts to stop the loss of biodiversity.
