Invitasjon til internasjonal konferanse om forvaltning og vern av Nordsjøen sett i et økologisk perspektiv

Konferansen er et ledd i myndighetenes markering av det internasjonale Havets år 1998, lansert av FN. Statssekretær Jesper Simonsen i Miljøverndepartementet vil holde åpningtalen ved konferansen. Rundt 100 representanter for myndigheter fra til sammen 16 europeiske land, forskere, organisasjoner innen miljøvern, nærings- og arbeidstakerorganisasjoner nasjonalt og internasjonalt, vil være tilstede.

Konferansen finner sted: 15 - 17 juni 1998 på Radisson SAS Scandinavia Hotel, Holbergsgate 30, Oslo

Vedlagt oversendes program for konferansen og et skjema for bestilling av hotellrom. Rom er reservert på Rainbow Munch Hotel, Oslo med bestillingsfrist 10 juni 1998.

Pressen blir særskilt invitert til lunsj den 17. juni med en del sentrale forskere og representanter for organisasjoner og myndigheter.

Bakgrunn og målsettinger

På den internasjonale ministerkonferansen om Nordsjøen i Bergen i mars 1997, ble mulighetene for en økologisk basert marin forvaltning drøftet som del av en felles fiskeri- og miljøvernpolitikk. I samarbeid med EUs miljøverndirektorat (DGXI), Sverige og Holland inviterer derfor Norge til en internasjonal konferanse for å følge opp disse drøftingene. Konferansen er finansiert av Miljøverndepartementet med støtte fra Nordisk Ministerråd

Hovedmålsettingen med konferansen er å videreutvikle et økologisk bære-kraftig konsept for forvaltning av Nordsjøen der søkelyset bl.a. vil bli satt på:

• prosesser i Nordsjøens økosystemer som er kritiske for opprettholdelse av det biologiske mangfoldet, deres spesielle struktur og funksjoner og produksjonsevne.
• menneskelig påvirkning av disse prosessene, der også virkningene av forurensninger og fiskeriene blir belyst.
• identifisering av kunnskapshull og hvordan menneskets aktiviteter påvirker prosessene i økosystemene. vurdering av hvordan bruken av ny kunnskap kan virke inn på dagens marine forvaltningspraksis.
