Environment Minister Børge Brende's Visit to the US to Discuss Climate Change Issues and the World Summit in Johannesburg

Environment Minister Børge Brende goes to Washington DC and New York 3-5 April 2002 to meet important leaders responsible for environmental issues in the US Government. He will also meet environmental leaders in the World Bank and the UN. The main elements in Brende's programme are:

Meeting with Under Secretary Paula Dobriansky, State Department

Meeting with Administrator and Cabinet Minister Christie Whitman,Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Meeting with Dr. Mohamed El-Ashry, Chairman and CEO, Global Environment Facility

4p.m

Meeting with James L. Connaughton, Chairman, Council of Environmental Quality, The White House

5 April 10a.m

Meeting with Kristalina Georgieva, Director, Environment Department, World Bank

3.30p.m.

Meeting with Under Secretary-General Nitin Desai, DESA, UN, New York

Environment Minister Børge Brende will inter alia discuss preparations for the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, climate change issues, biodiversity, Arctic cooperation and cooperation on nuclear safety with his US colleagues. With representatives of the World Bank Brende will discuss the Bank's environment strategy, and implementation of environmental conventions, with particular emphasis on biodiversity and hazardous substances.

A meeting with the Press is planned for the afternoon of Thursday, 4 April. Further information will be sent out later.
