Norwegian Foreign Minister Jan Petersen deplores Israel’s decision to remove Arafat
On 11 September, the Israeli cabinet declared that Yasser Arafat is an obstacle to peace between Israel and the Palestinians, and decided that Israel would “act to remove this obstacle”. Norwegian Foreign Minister deeply deplores this decision.
-I deeply deplore the Israeli government’s decision to remove President Arafat when and in whatever way it decides, said the Foreign Minister. - President Arafat is the elected leader of the Palestinians, and cannot be removed on the basis of a decision made by the Israeli cabinet.
- Norway recognises Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorism. However, any action taken by Israel must be in accordance with international law.
- During the last few days, the situation in the Middle East has become more dangerous. It is essential that Israeli and Palestinian leaders now exercise restraint and carefully consider the consequences of their actions. I urge all parties in the strongest possible terms to put an end to the violence and agree to a ceasefire as a basis for continuing to implement the Road Map for peace.
- It is crucial that an effective Palestinian government is formed as soon as possible, and that the Palestinian leaders join forces in fighting Palestinian terror. Israel for its part must stop its military operations before the situation gets out of control, concluded Mr Petersen.
