Norwegian Government nominates candidates for the office of judge in the European Court of Human Rights

The Norwegian Government has nominated the following candidates, listed in alphabetical order, for the office of judge in the European Court of Human Rights:

Appeal Court Judge Sverre Erik Jebens

Supreme Court Judge Ketil Lund

Advocate Berit Reiss-Andersen

The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg deals with complaints by individuals, non-governmental organisations and States concerning violations of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The Court is made up of one judge for each of the States that are party to the Convention. The office held by a Norwegian judge will be vacant as from 1 November 2004, when Hanne Sophie Greve’s term expires. According to the Convention, the Government is to nominate three candidates for the office.

In a public announcement, the Government invited anyone who wished to do so to submit proposals for candidates by 5 January 2004.

The candidates have been selected on the basis of an overall assessment in which particular weight is given to their judicial qualifications, relevant experience and language skills.

It is the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe that is to elect a judge from the Norwegian Government’s list of candidates. The election will take place at the end of April.
