Norway fully supports US military operations
“The Government fully supports the US-led military operations against the terrorist network in Afghanistan. It is now clear that Afghanistan is a base for a network of terrorist activity. Therefore the use of military force is necessary,” said Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg when commenting on the military operations launched today against the terrorist network in Afghanistan.
“The USA is exercising its incontestable right of self-defence in accordance with the UN Charter. It is clear that Osama bin Laden and his terrorist network were responsible for the appalling attacks on the USA on 11 September. A broad-based coalition from all parts of the world is behind the measures that are now being taken,” said the Prime Minister.
“International terrorism is a threat to people all over the world. This is a battle against terrorism and its supporters and terrorist networks. It is not an attack on the Arab countries or on Islam,” said Prime Minister Stoltenberg.
Norway supports USA’s actions together with the other Allies in NATO. Norwegian troops are not taking part in the operations that have now been launched.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the USA has stressed that the operations are targeted at military installations and communications equipment. The USA has emphasized the humanitarian aspects of the situation in Afghanistan and has already started airdrops of humanitarian and medical supplies.
Like the USA and a number of other countries, Norway has stepped up humanitarian efforts to alleviate the suffering of the internally displaced and refugees in neighbouring countries. On Friday 5 October, NOK 200 million was allocated for medicine, clothing and other humanitarian supplies.
A number of contingency measures have been implemented in Norway since 11 September, and the Government is continually reviewing the situation.
