Norway allocates NOK five million in emergency relief for drought victims in Kenya
According to Minister of International Development Anne Kristin Sydnes, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will contribute NOK five million to the UN’s consolidated appeal for the drought in the Horn of Africa, earmarked for Kenya, in the near future.
During the past three to four years the Horn of Africa has been experiencing a severe drought. In January the UN estimated that over 13 million people in the region have been affected. While the situation has now improved somewhat in some of the other countries in the region, Kenya is experiencing its worst drought in 60 years. Over four million people are in danger of starving to death. There is a critical need for food aid, especially in the northern and eastern parts of the country.
