PREFACE

By presenting a plan of action for aesthetic subjects and the cultural dimension in schools, the Ministries of Cultural Affairs and of Education, Research and Church Affairs are seeking to provide favourable conditions for increased cooperation between basic schools, their local environments, and cultural institutions.

Developing existing and new forms of cooperation presents a major challenge both to cultural institutions and to schools. A further important step will be to initiate joint measures and forms of mediation capable of stirring children and young people and stimulating their own activities and experience.

The role of schools as creators and mediators of culture has been enlarged in the curricula being prepared for them for the years ahead. Counties and municipalities are engaging in a large number of cultural activities in and out of school. Linking the various arenas together in a commitment to cooperate will provide a good platform for the creation of a fuller and better rounded environment for children and adolescents to group up in.
