Norway's premier sees peace prize as recognition of disarmament efforts
"The award of this year's Nobel Peace Prize to the Pugwash Conferences and Mr. Joseph Rotblat, is a recognition of the efforts of the international peace organisation of the scientific community to achieve nuclear disarmament and a total ban on all nuclear testing", says Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland.
"During the Cold War, the Pugwash Conferences managed to bring together scientists from East and West. By basing their efforts on scientific knowledge, Pugwash has set an example which has inspired many other peace organisations", Mrs. Brundtland says.
"Those countries that have not yet discontinued their nuclear testing programmes, should take particular note of this year's award", the Norwegian Premier says.
