An increasing number of asylum seekers are choosing to return to their country of origin. In November, 230 persons applied for return assistance, compared with an average so far this year of around 140 per month.

All asylum seekers whose applications are refused or who do not have a residence permit in Norway are obliged to return home. Anyone staying in the country illegally loses their rights and risks being forcibly returned by the police.

The Voluntary Assisted Return Programme assists asylum seekers and other irregular migrants, who wish to return from Norway to their home countries voluntarily.
