The European Resource Centre on Education for Intercultural Understanding, Human Rights and Democratic Citizenship (“The European Wergeland Centre”) is a Norwegian initiative in cooperation with the Council of Europe, to be located in Oslo. The Executive Director will cover a wide range of tasks and be engaged in a number of activities demanding professional qualifications and abilities.
The European Resource Centre on Education for Intercultural Understanding, Human Rights and Democratic Citizenship (“The European Wergeland Centre”) is a Norwegian initiative in cooperation with the Council of Europe, to be located in Oslo. The Centre is especially set up to promote the work of the Council of Europe and its member states in the field of education for democratic citizenship, human rights and intercultural understanding.
The Centre shall:
- carry out and support research in the above mentioned domains,
- provide in-service training and support for the professional development of teachers and teacher training professionals. The Centre shall also
- disseminate information and serve as a platform and meeting place for relevant actors.
The working language is English.
Key tasks of the Executive Director
The Executive Director will cover a wide range of tasks. Key tasks will be:
- to establish and develop the Centre, according to the statutes and in cooperation with the board
- to carry out day-to-day management, and supervise the Centre's activities
- to be responsible for recruiting the staff of the Centre
Key competencies of the Executive Director
The Executive Director will be engaged in a number of activities demanding professional qualifications and abilities. Desired key competences will be:
- Relevant University degree, minimum at Master’s level. Preferably also experience from relevant research and development (R&D) work and administration,
- Other professional experience attached to working areas of the Centre, including teacher education and international cooperation,
- Insight and visions within the field of education for intercultural understanding, human rights and democratic citizenship,
- Abilities for team-building and responsible leadership, including communication and judgement skills,
- Highest proficiency in English, oral and written. Proficiency in other major European languages, preferably French, will be an advantage.
The Executive Director will be appointed for a period of five years, with the possibility of prolongation for another five years. Applicants should ideally be able to take up the position by 1 December 2008.
