Welcomes carbon capture partnership
Minister of Environment Helen Bjørnøy welcomes Statoil's and Shell's decision to work together to capture and use CO2 for enhanced oil recovery offshore at Tjeldbergodden - a gas-fired power plant and methanol production facility in Mid-Norway, which also provides electricity to offshore fields.
-This
is a good example of industry responding constructively to
political signals. The Norwegian Government has made it clear from
day one that carbon capture is a prerequisite for any new
concessions to build gas-fired power stations. This new industrial
partnership marks the beginning of the end of a heated national
political debate on whether to build traditional gas-fired power
plants when climate change continues to be one of the greatest
challenges of our time. We are therefore glad that both industry
and environmentalists have continued to uphold the vision that
carbon capture is a viable option, and that this vision now is
close to becoming a reality. High environmental standards and
ambitions can be a strong incentive for the development of
environmental technology, says Helen Bjørnøy.
