Norway supports development of roadmap for CCS within industries

The Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy has granted 1.8 million NOK (212.500 Euro), to the The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in support of their effort to develop a roadmap for the deployment of carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) within industrial processes. The roadmap will target industrial sectors in developing countries and emerging economies. The Global CCS Institute is funding the other half of the project, which has a total budget of 3.6 million NOK (425.000 Euro).

The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that CCS applied to industrial processes could provide nine percent of the global CO₂ emission reductions in 2050.

- Industrial activity accounts for a large part of CO2 emissions in the world, and is increasing in developing countries. CCS is important to reduce emissions from these sources. Our support to this project will help facilitate increased use of CCS within the industry in developing countries, says Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Mr. Terje Riis-Johansen.

The project will start up in the first quarter of 2010.
