Press Release

Norway, Spain and Sweden, together with the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mr. Jan Egeland, convened a meeting today in Geneva on the humanitarian needs in the Palestinian territory and in support of the UN revised humanitarian appeal. The meeting called on all donors to assist the UN in its efforts to meet the immediate humanitarian needs of the Palestinian population.

The humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territory is severe and may worsen dramatically. Faced with this situation, the United Nations and selected non-governmental organisations have taken the unprecedented step of revising their appeal for humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians from USD 215 million to USD 385 million. So far, only about one third of the revised appeal has been funded. The UN appeal is aimed at helping the most needy – particularly children who make up half of the Palestinian population. The ICRC has equally launched a revised appeal.
