“It is positive that the case against Saddam Hussein has been resolved for the time being through the verdict handed down today.It is important that the defendants from the previous regime are being called to account for their crimes, and that the Iraqi judicial system has been able to conduct an open trial,” said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

“Whether or not the verdict will be appealed remains to be seen. There is little doubt after this trial that Saddam Hussein is guilty of the gravest crimes. Nonetheless, Norway is opposed to the death penalty on grounds of principle,” said Mr Støre.

“The verdict against Saddam Hussein is an important step in dealing with the crimes committed by his regime. It does not, however, solve Iraq’s political problems, including the serious security situation, which have deeper causes. Therefore, the Government of Iraq must, in cooperation with the various groupings in the country, persist in their efforts to achieve security and peace for the entire population,” concluded Mr Støre.
