International Whaling Commission (IWC) adopts declaration
“Norway is delighted that the IWC adopted the St Kitts and Nevis declaration last night Norwegian time,” commented Norway’s Whaling Commissioner Karsten Klepsvik.
“Although this is a small victory and does not mean any change in practice for Norwegian whaling operations, it is nevertheless important considering the virtual deadlock that the IWC has reached,” Mr Klepsvik continued.
The declaration establishes the principle of sustainable harvesting, based on scientific data and in accordance with internationally recognised principles for marine resource management.
Norway intends to continue its efforts to make the IWC resume its responsibility for managing the world’s whale resources in accordance with the Whaling convention.
