This opportunity for young talents from Norway to perform in some of London’s finest concert venues is both exciting and challenging. It is a recognition of their skill. It is also a part of Norway’s cultural cooperation and foreign policy.

Since it was established in 1927, the Barratt Due Institute of Music in Oslo has played an important part in the training of musicians. In particular, its work with young talents has attracted considerable attention over the last 20 years. Pupils at Barratt Due are constantly winning prizes in international competitions and are frequently invited to perform in national and international concert venues.

By giving young people with particular musical talents and interests a chance to develop their skills, Barratt Due has provided an important supplement to Norway’s public music education system.

Creative activities reflect people’s identity and strengthen their belief in their own abilities and values. I hope that this visit will be a chance to build ties with the other schools that are taking part and foster friendships and lasting networks between these young people who are brought together through their music – our common international language.
