Oslo, January 2011
Dear conference participant
Welcome to Arctic Frontiers 2011.
In Norway, 2011 will be celebrated as the Nansen-Amundsen Year, marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Norwegian scientist, diplomat, humanist and Nobel laureate Fridtjof Nansen, and the 100th anniversary of the first Antarctic expedition to reach the South Pole, led by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen.
Enclosed is a DVD containing footage from Amundsen’s South Pole expedition in 1910-12. The film is part of the UNESCO international Memory of the World programme, a register of documentary heritage of particularly great value to humanity as a whole. A book will also follow that shows the historical context of the films and photographs.
Yours sincerely
Jonas Gahr Støre
