At the UN Climate Summit in New York 23 September, State Secretary Hans Brattskar launched the Norwegian initiative “The 1 Giga Ton Coalition”.
In order to cover the emission gap, Energy+ invite countries, international organisations and civil society organisations to join “The 1 Giga ton Coalition”. The Coalition will facilitate measuring and reporting of reduced greenhouse gas emissions resulting from actions to implement renewable energy and energy efficiency in developing countries.
It appears that a small number of initiatives and programs that support renewable energy and energy efficiency in developing countries are measuring and reporting the reduced greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the supported activities. According to the UNEP Emission Gap Report 2013 the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions required in 2020 in addition to the present pledges made by countries, is about 8 - 12 GtCO2e/year on a global scale to stay on track to comply with the 2 degrees goal.
