Sustainable energy brings opportunities for economic growth, human development, employment and is essential for a modern day decent standard of living. It empowers people and paves the way out of poverty by lighting homes and small businesses, providing essential services to run hospitals and schools and provides us with services for modern-day communication such as mobile phones and internet.
Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) is an initiative initiated by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. SE4All’s objectives are threefold:
- To ensure universal access to modern energy services by 2030
- To double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency by 2030, and
- To double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix by 2030.
The UN General Assembly declared 2012 to be the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All and 2012-2024 to be the Decade of Sustainable Energy for All. These declarations highlight the importance of energy issues in the world today.
To maintain momentum, tracking progress on the goals is essential. In May 2013, SE4All launched a Global Tracking Framework with baseline energy data and suggestions for indicators. This will form a critical part of the SE4All initiative’s activities in upcoming years.
