EU-erklæring om presidentvalget i Elfenbenskysten 31. oktober 2020
Dato: 22.09.2020 | Utenriksdepartementet
22. september sluttet Norge seg til EU-erklæringen om presidentvalget i Elfenbenskysten 31. oktober 2020.
In the context of the current election process, the European Union (EU) reiterates its commitment to the principles of inclusiveness, freedom of expression, transparency, respect for the rule of law and, where applicable, independent election observation mechanisms required to ensure that the results of the elections are credible and accepted by all.
The EU deplores the violence and clashes which have occurred in recent weeks, claiming several lives, and calls on the authorities to carry out investigations so that those responsible can be prosecuted. It also calls for respect for civil liberties, in particular the right of every citizen to demonstrate peacefully and in a law-abiding way, without interference, and to express political opinions without being arrested or imprisoned.
The EU notes the Constitutional Council’s decision of 14 September concerning the candidates eligible to stand in the presidential election. Although it is not for the EU to decide on this issue, it would stress that it is the primary responsibility of the competent authorities and institutions in Côte d’Ivoire to ensure that the election process is impartial, transparent, inclusive and fair, and supported by citizens. The EU notes the various cases brought before the African Court on Human and People's Rights (AfCHPR) concerning the election process and reiterates its commitment to respect for international justice.
The EU calls on all of the political class and of civil society, as well as the relevant administrations, to pursue dialogue and engage with one another in a responsible, constructive and peaceful way, and to ensure that this election process consolidates lasting reconciliation among all Ivorians. It also encourages the authorities to take the initiative to help to calm the political atmosphere.
As a historical partner of Côte d’Ivoire, the EU will continue to accompany and support the country in this process, with all the actors involved.
